program note
while in my hometown of washington, iowa through the summer of 2025, i decided to capture 1-2 minutes of video per day of whatever area of the town i found myself exploring. when i began this project, i did not know how (or if) this footage would come together into a fully realized work. after several months of recording, i had accumulated about 8 hours of unedited footage, capturing washington on foot (on one of my many early-morning or late-night walks), in the car, and on my bike.

i spent the back half of 2025 and the first moments of 2026 compiling this footage into a work for piano solo and video titled home video. the vast majority of the work is freely improvised, but within a set structure determined by the video footage. not only does a clip's duration influence the performer, but each video's subject (whether a public park, a busy downtown area, or fields of corn with the bright sun bearing down) shapes the musical material being improvised.

home video is an interpretive, self-expressive exploration of what it means to explore a place you've called home for years, and how the mundane bits of life can carry the deepest emotional weight.
